How to Stay Productive Without Being Derailed by High Sensitivity in Business
Running an online business can be overwhelming, especially for HSP entrepreneurs. With countless tasks to manage, from scheduling and planning to responding to emails and social media, it's easy to feel like you're drowning in responsibilities.
The sheer volume of offerings, programs, courses, and events available online only adds to the confusion, making it hard to stay focused on what truly matters for your business.
The Struggle with Overwhelming Choices
In my journey as an HSP entrepreneur, I've tried various systems for scheduling, calendars, and daily planning. Despite my efforts, these tools often failed to work for me. The constant barrage of online offerings—courses, programs, freebies, and events—created a fear of missing out (FOMO) that led me to invest in things that didn't serve my business goals.
I would buy into these offerings, only to lose sight of why I started my business in the first place. This cycle left me feeling discouraged and burned out.
The Importance of Business-Building Fundamentals
What I realized was that I wasn't spending time on the right things. This happens to many highly sensitive entrepreneurs (and online entrepreneurs in general) because we often skip the essential step of establishing business-building fundamentals.
Without clarity about your niche, target market, and message, it's easy to get distracted by every shiny new course or program. But when you start with the basics, you’ve already won half the battle.
The other half is learning how to care for yourself as an HSP so you can be productive in a way that works for you.
The Role of Self-Care in Productivity
Once you’ve acknowledged and implemented these two crucial aspects—business-building fundamentals and self-care—you can redefine what productivity means for you as an HSP. Every person is different, and while HSPs share certain traits, it’s important to recognize that not all HSPs have the same temperament or work the same.
I wasn’t productive in the past because I was scattered, taking courses here and there, following different influencers, and trying to learn from YouTubers. Again, I believe this happened because I hadn’t established my business-building essentials and was lacking focus.
My Personal Approach to Staying Productive
Today, I no longer feel derailed or unproductive because I’ve built those essentials into my business. Self-care has become non-negotiable for me. I engage in activities that recharge me, such as strength training, walking, and staying active.
More importantly, I make time to rest in bed by closing my eyes and without any distractions—no digital devices, music, bright lights, or work.
During these moments, I reflect on what I’ve learned, and what’s important to me, breathing deeply in and out, and even spend time in prayer to God or just letting my thoughts flow naturally.
Afterward, I feel recharged and ready to tackle my next task or project.
Practical Strategies for Staying on Track
To avoid being derailed as a highly sensitive entrepreneur, I use specific time management techniques, such as breaking tasks into smaller, manageable chunks. I don’t force myself to use methods that work for others if they don’t suit me.
If something doesn’t work, I move on and find what does. I also structure my day to include time for work, play, and rest. Instead of pushing through stress or overwhelm, I acknowledge my feelings and give myself permission to take breaks or slow down when necessary.
Lastly, I manage my energy by avoiding situations that drain me unnecessarily.
Conclusion
Being a highly sensitive entrepreneur comes with unique challenges, but by focusing on the basics of business-building and prioritizing self-care, you can create a more fluid and productive workflow. Embrace the techniques that work best for you and allow yourself the space to recharge.
The most important thing to know overall is to remember that productivity isn’t about how much you do, but how effectively you manage your energy and focus.
